Are Your Atlanta Property Taxes Too High?

It's that time of year again - property tax assessment season! As a homeowner, it's important to understand the purpose of the assessment and how it affects your taxes.

The property tax assessment is not a bill.

It's simply an assessment used by the county and city to determine what your taxes will be. This assessment will explain where your property tax money is being allotted and where it's going.

Why should you review your tax assessment?

  1. To verify that you have a homestead exemption. If your home is your primary residence, you should have a **homestead exemption** on it. This exemption is a one-time gift from the state of Georgia to property owners with primary residences. You can find out if you have a homestead exemption by looking at the property description section of your assessment. If the exemption is in place, you should see a "yes" under the homestead exemption category.

  2. To ensure that the assessed value of your property is accurate. If you think the assessed value is too high, you can appeal your taxes. The assessment will provide you with a deadline for appealing your taxes. Thinking your taxes may need to be appealed? We are here to help!

  3. Understand where your property tax money is going. For example, if you live in the city of Atlanta in Fulton County, your taxes will be allocated towards Fulton County tax, Atlanta General, Atlanta Bonds, Atlanta School Operation, and Atlanta Parks. The total estimated taxes for the year will be listed at the bottom of the assessment. If you're happy with this number, there's no need to appeal.
