Atlanta is the capital of the U.S. state of Georgia. During the American Civil War, it served an important role for the Confederacy until it was captured in 1864. The City almost entirely ruined. However, the city rebounded dramatically and became a national industrial center and the unofficial capital of the "New South". Atlanta also became a major orgnaizing center of the American Civil Rights Movement with Martin Luther King Jr and many other locals.
